The Trouble with Teams

Teams are the biggest performance multiplier there is. A group of committed individuals working together, towards a common goal does more than add to the output. It multiplies the output. So for many businesses creating a context and a setting wherein individuals can combine, to work as a team is often a highly efficient method to achieve the common goal. Daily Exercise

How common place is it today to see people exercising? All sorts of shapes, sizes, abilities are regularly to be observed, frequently squeezed into unflattering lycra as they dutifully pound the streets of our cities, the lanes of our countryside or the thousands of gyms that have sprung up. Hordes of folk in brightly coloured trainers, on bicycles, solo or in packs dressed appropriately or not, they are out there maintaining the body they were given; enhancing and prolonging its useful life. It is all very laudable, necessary and uplifting.

There are leaders…

There are leaders and then there are business enterprise leaders. The skills and the disciplines required to be a leader or a manager in the twenty first century are huge. I keep pleading, ‘never make someone a manager unless they “get” people’. The core skills of a manager are people skills, they are about dealing effectively with people. The clue is in the first three letters of the word manager. We might refer to ‘man managers’ but I wonder are there any other sorts? In addition to those core people skills which we may examine in depth another time, there are a whole multitude of other skills that may be required for any particular role; marketing skills, knowing and understanding the numbers, strategy, tactics, selling, process, organisation, technical skills to name just a few. So, the demands on the modern manager are many and significant. They are a lifetime in the learning.

Routine Will Set You Free

As a business, any business grows, it necessarily becomes more complex. More people mean more relationships, more channels, more products, more opinions all add to, and often multiply, the complexity and one of the challenges that very quickly faces the owner or leader of a growing business is how to master that complexity.
