Loving Lean

Lean, lean manufacturing, the Toyota Production System, Kaizen are terms that are often used synonymously. They refer to the systematic removal of waste in a set of processes. I am not a lean expert and I struggle sometimes to understand precisely what constitutes waste but I am sill loving lean.

Technician or Entrepreneur? It is all about mindset.

People can go into business for all kinds of reasons, and when they do they usually take with them a specific technical skill or a set of technical skills. If you have ever watched my Famous Wiggly Line Theory I talk about someone who is a tiler, but those technical skills can be anything, a saleman, a lawyer, a solicitor, an accountant or a vet. However the technical skills that are needed to get a business underway are not the skills that are needed for that business to grow and to prosper. The moment a technician becomes a business owner he or she needs to become an expert in the business of business rather than simply an expert in what the business does.

What Can Happen In 10 Years.

There has long been a saying in the business development world that goes “80% of businesses will fail within the first 5 years, of the 20% that remain 80% of them will fail within the next 5 years; therefore of every 100 businesses founded in 2005 only 4 will remain in 2015.” So if you have established a business that is still in existence after ten years Congratulations.

Enabling Genius

Sir John Whitmore told a great story about two children who lived next door to each other. One winter’s morning they awoke to find the ground covered in snow, and as young boys would they both nagged their mother to let them go and play outside in the snow. Johnny’s mother made sure that Johnny was thoroughly wrapped up with gloves, hat scarf wellies and thick socks before she would let him out. Jimmy’s mother took a different approach. She said “of course you can go out and play if that is what you want Jimmy, but before you do is there anything that you need to think about?”
